Backpack / Budget / Shoestring Travel Links

If you have a favorite site that would fit this category, let me know!

How to See the World on $25 a Day or Less A well thought out book on backpack travel. Big bonus: it's online and it's free. One of my favorite web sites.

Backpackers.com One of my new favorites. Polished, professional, well written and hip. Go there.

Lonely Planet LP guides are the bibles of  backpack travel. I can't count the number of souls I have seen wandering the globe with backpacks on and Lonely Planet books in hand. Never in the backpack, always in the hand. Great books. Lots of fun stuff to read on the site. Best backpack and budget travle message boards anywhere; look in "Thorn Tree" and pick your topic!

The Rec.Travel Library Travel and tourism information with an emphasis on personal travelogues. I go here frequently; I always find something interesting and enjoyable!

Fodors A wonderful site that is a cross between a magazine, a book and a commercial. Lots of superb travel information from one of the top travel guide publishers.

Frommers Another great site. Lots and lots of information for budget travel. Hours of enjoyment, be warned, you might waste the whole night here!

Traveling Lite Official web site for the TV series. Slick graphics and very well written. Check it out!

Budget Traveller's Guide to Sleeping in Airports From this web site produced by Donna McSherry: "For travelers who are REALLY on a budget and are looking for a way to skim a few bucks off their traveling expenses, why not consider sleeping in an airport? Many airports are actually better than local lodging. And to top it off -- IT'S FREE!" One of those web sites you tell yourself "why didn't I think of that?"  Also, sing up for Donna's  Cheap Like Me Travel Society for tips on really cutting costs--and some laughs!  (Quote from the site: "Hi! My name is Donna and I am cheap......." )

How to Hitchhike A complete guide.  I mean everything.  Pretty cool! Links to how to hitchhike, interstate highway maps, hitchhikers traveling experiences, hitchhiker backpacking tips, truck stops, and laws against train hopping hobos.

Budget Travel In spite of a certain lack of polish and lots of commercial plugs, it has lots of good information and links.

Yahoo Hostel Directory Links has several comprehensive lists of hostel directories while Yahoo Hostel Links has about 150 miscellaneous web pages for individual hostels.

Hostels In Listings of hostels around the world.

Hostels of Europe Just like it says, a guide to hostels in Europe and much, much  more.  Plenty of information on backpack traveling, money, packing etc.

Izon's Backpacker Journal Mostly promo for Lucy Izon's book and travel column. Has some Backpack traveler's news and links to BP travel sites.

Cyber-adventures.com They bill themselves as "Real Time" Travel Adventures™" though I haven't seen any evidence to support that. Nonetheless, there are some excellent travelogues here. There are also some that read like "What I did on my summer vacation." Take a chance, you might pick a winner!

Shoestring Travel - Lots of miscellaneous travel stuff--and that's the problem. Not much focus. The graphics could use a whack with a sledge hammer as well. But there are some good travleogues and the links are extensive.

Backpacker's Guide No Handy Hints, just lots of useful information. Mostly links to more info.

Kaaryn's European Backpacking Information Kaaryn admits up front that she has never backpack traveled, but she has done her homework! Her hints and tips are right on the money for European travel.  (My only fault with her logic is that she reccommend backpacks that are pretty tiny; then again, I am 6'4" 220 lbs., and a hog when it comes to packing!) Defintely worth a read.

Visiting Britain Cheaply - cheap travel and accommodation, how to apply for visas, where to go, links to many tourist sites.

Internet Hostelling Directory the biggest and best site on the web for information about hostels and budget travel! Their Worldwide Hostel Guide is quite possibly the largest database of hostels in the world.

Internet Cafes NerdWorld's guide to cyber cafes. E-mail is cheaper that a postcard and it gets there before you get home...

Cyber Café Guide version 13.0 Another guide to cyber cafe's.

Backpackers Index Page Hmmm. Looks like somebody started out with some ambition but gave up. Has some unique Australian links if you're into that mate.

Backpacking Travel Page Not a lot of info here. A few basic tips and some backpack travel and camping links.

More Link Directories

Excite Travel Backpackers and Excite Travel Adventure and Outdoor Sports have a well edited list of links on backpack travel and around the world travel. Unfortunately, it's well hidden on their web site. As much as I use Excite, I just discovered them!

Endless Jouneys Resouce Guide for the Budget Traveller A good set of links.  Actually, it's very good.

A Request:
I have re-designed the whole site to (theoretically) improve ease of viewing in all major web browsers and to make individual pages easier to link to.  If you encounter any problems, let me know what the problem is and what browser you are using (for example, "Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 95," "Nestscape Communicator 4.0 for Macintosh," or "I don't have a clue, this is my girlfriend's computer" and I will try to fix it.
